These decorated sugar cookies evoke the feel of a cozy cabin Christmas and are a dedication to my childhood Christmases. I hope you enjoy them and Merry Christmas!
Cozy Cabin Christmas Cookies
This year for our annual Christmas cookies, my sister and I decided we needed a bit of nostalgia.
We grew up overseas in a tropical climate, so our best chance for recreating something as close to a Minnesota Christmas was to drive up into the mountains and rent a cabin during our Christmas break. It got incredibly cold– sometimes 50ยบ in the mornings!– and we would light a fire in the fireplace.
We brought up a 3′ tall Christmas tree with colored lights.
There was no TV, and no internet (while I was there in the dark ages) so before school let out we’d load up on books and then spend our days reading, playing shuffleboard in the meeting hall, and drinking hot cocoa.
For the book cookies, we used royal icing for the shapes and let it set overnight. In the morning I used both food color markers and some gold luster dust mixed with a drop of vodka to add the book titles.
The cabin we stayed in had these classic Corelle cups, so we had to recreate them. To be honest, they were way harder than I was hoping. ๐ We saw a video of Sweet Ambs making this design that inspired us, but I don’t know if our cups were just too small or if my smallest piping tip was too big, or what, but it just didn’t work.
So instead of piping it on, I put tiny dots on with my scriber tool and swirled them into the right patterns. It took forever. 0/10, do not recommend.
While I do love these cookies and they give me all the feels, they were double the amount of work of our average Christmas cookies, and I don’t think they look any more impressive. ๐ But now we have it out of our system and we can stick to simpler cookies next year. I’m too old to be decorating until midnight!
