We had an awesome little shindig for Little Man’s 5th birthday (how the heck is he 5 now??) and I’d love to tell you all about it.
This year we had a little more trouble figuring out what kind of theme to go with. So I perused Pinterest (like always) and saw some ideas for spy parties and knew that as soon as I suggested it to Little Man, there would be no changing our minds!
And while there were plenty of ideas for decorations and food and activities on Pinterest, I was feeling like I needed something a little more cohesive. Since Little Man is the oldest of most of his friends, I was concerned about making it accessible and fun for 4-year-olds. Last year we planned fun games for the kids, but they weren’t that interested in them. So this year I knew the party needed a bit more structure to work.
Well, hello friends.
I’ve legit been working on this post for a couple of weeks. It should not be that hard to write a blog post! I thought that after the party, things would slow down, and they just didn’t. So here we are, like several weeks later, and I’m finally getting this darned thing up.
Miss Bean is 1! I can’t even believe it. How does my life go so fast? Ok, before I go off on an existential crisis here, let me tell you about her party.
Since Bean isn’t old enough yet to pick what theme she wants for her party, it was up to me. When I thought about what I wanted, I didn’t know specifics, but I knew for sure I wanted to get good pictures! So I did what anyone would do, and I turned to Pinterest.
Pinterest is pretty much my best friend & worst enemy. It’s so great for inspiration, but it’s way easy to get out of hand. I recently read this article on the struggles of those with my Meyers-Briggs personality type and one of the things it said was “Constantly biting off more than you can chew… and then chewing it out of stubbornness.” So me + Pinterest = setting the bar too high and then killing myself to reach it. Haha. I quickly set on the Burlap & Lace theme, which is girlier than we will likely ever do again, but I knew the pictures would be awesome. Once the theme was set, I let inspiration run away with me. (more…)
It’s been ages since I posted. So here’s a quick recap of my life in the last several months before I get back into (hopefully) regular posts.
So there was a wedding. Remember like 12 years ago when I talked about that coming up? Well, it happened. In July.

Aw, look at my pretty sister! And hey– that’s me.
I made a bazillion tiny macarons for the reception. I made three kinds– lavender lemon, balsamic strawberry & chocolate, and green tea ginger. I assume they were good, because I never got to taste any at the reception. Turns out I should’ve made two bazillion.
Friends, we do not mess around over here when it comes to birthday parties.
Ever since my mom came to visit with her iPad, getting my son hooked on Angry Birds, I’ve been planning this Angry Bird-themed party. So, like 4-5 months of planning.
I don’t know what it is about kids’ parties that make me go a little nutty and start taking things beyond a normal level, but it’s just fun. Well, until it’s the week of the party and I’m swamped with things to make and get ready, and I can’t tone it down because I’m just too invested.
That being said, I did better than last year in that I wasn’t frantically frosting cupcakes as the guests arrived. I was plating the last of the appetizers as people got here, but other than that I was able to join the party from the get-go.
However, in similar fashion to last year, I was testing out recipes like a crazy person for months in advance. This year it was even more important because we had some food allergies to deal with. So I had to find and/or develop recipes that were gluten-free, refined sugar-free, dairy-free, and egg-free. Woah. So I tested out a lot of recipes, a few of which were so bad they went straight into the trash. Anyway. More on that later. (more…)
