Birthday Parties

Catching Up

Woah, guys.

Woah.

It’s been ages since I posted. So here’s a quick recap of my life in the last several months before I get back into (hopefully) regular posts.

So there was a wedding. Remember like 12 years ago when I talked about that coming up? Well, it happened. In July.

Aw, look at my pretty sister! And hey– that’s me.

I made a bazillion tiny macarons for the reception. I made three kinds– lavender lemon, balsamic strawberry & chocolate, and green tea ginger. I assume they were good, because I never got to taste any at the reception. Turns out I should’ve made two bazillion.

Little Man’s Angry Birds Birthday Party

Friends, we do not mess around over here when it comes to birthday parties.

Ever since my mom came to visit with her iPad, getting my son hooked on Angry Birds, I’ve been planning this Angry Bird-themed party. So, like 4-5 months of planning.

I don’t know what it is about kids’ parties that make me go a little nutty and start taking things beyond a normal level, but it’s just fun. Well, until it’s the week of the party and I’m swamped with things to make and get ready, and I can’t tone it down because I’m just too invested.

That being said, I did better than last year in that I wasn’t frantically frosting cupcakes as the guests arrived. I was plating the last of the appetizers as people got here, but other than that I was able to join the party from the get-go.

However, in similar fashion to last year, I was testing out recipes like a crazy person for months in advance. This year it was even more important because we had some food allergies to deal with. So I had to find and/or develop recipes that were gluten-free, refined sugar-free, dairy-free, and egg-free. Woah. So I tested out a lot of recipes, a few of which were so bad they went straight into the trash. Anyway. More on that later. (more…)

Little Man’s First Birthday

Two weekends ago, Little Man had a birthday. His very first birthday, in fact.

So we had a party.

Duh.

I was so excited to have this party. I planned the food really far in advance and tested out different recipes. My husband was pretty upset when I had to bake several batches of cupcakes before finding one I liked.

Despite significant prior planning, the week leading up to the party kept becoming more and more full of other obligations. It was fairly frustrating to me to watch more and more things I couldn’t avoid filling up every day of that week. I knew it would be difficult to get everything finished. Add to this the project of fixing the deck that turned into a nightmare that we were finishing up to the night before, and I was one stressed mama. (more…)
