Gardening

I finally started some seeds for my vegetable & herb garden. I probably should have done this a couple weeks ago, but… well… I don’t really have an excuse.

Maybe I’ll blame the fact that Old Man Winter just doesn’t seem to want to let go this year.  We had snow over the weekend.

We had to make a plan this year.  We’ve had a garden at this house for the past 2 years, but neither year was particularly productive.  The main issue was with the tomatoes.  And squirrels.  Specifically, tomato-eating squirrels.  Oooh, how I hate the squirrels in our yard!  Last year I had 2 tomato plants and only harvested 1 single tomato.

This year is going to be different.

Kitchen Tools, Part II

A while back, I wrote this post about kitchen tools that I can’t live without.  Well, there were a few items missing from that list.  Here are a few other kitchen tools that are indispensible in my kitchen.

My measuring cups.  Oh, how I love these measuring cups.  They’re All-Clad, stainless steel, and seriously sturdy.  What they aren’t is cheap, but I’m pretty sure that these will last me my entire life and I don’t have to worry about my son dropping them and breaking them (although they might put a serious dent in my bamboo floors.) I have both the regular ones and the “odd sizes” which include the 2/3, 3/4 and 1 1/2 cups.  If you’re interested, you can get them here.  Also, they seem to have gone up in price since I bought them.  Well, what hasn’t these days?

Lemon Poppy Seed Cake

On Sunday, we had a church potluck.  I may or may not have forgotten about it until my sister reminded me on Thursday, and then forgot about it again until Saturday afternoon.

Don’t judge me.  I have a 6 month old and routinely get very little sleep.

Anyway, so there I was, Saturday afternoon with nothing to make to bring to church the next morning. So I decided to raid my grandma’s recipes.  It seemed like the right thing to do.  There’s something about church potlucks and grandma’s recipes that just fits.

I dug around my scads of scans (heh) and pulled up this number:

Mommy’s Little Monster

I made a new onesie for my little man. It was a monster, of course.

I started out the same way I start all my onesies: with a sketch.  I usually do a web image search of the type of thing I want, then pick out different elements that I like and make them into a new, original design.
